The Arts Area presents...Marketable Thinking for Artists

Join artist Rick Caughman for a talk on branding and marketing in the arts.

Rick Caughman, originally from upstate New York, lives and works in Ontario, California. He graduated from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena with a degree in advertising illustration, which trained him to work in the communication arts. He began his teaching career at Chaffey College, the La Sierra campus of Loma Linda University, and the University of California at Riverside on a wide range of fine and commercial art topics. With his experience in fine and commercial arts he sees an importance in promoting “marketable thinking” for artists.

While teaching, Rick completed illustration work for local book and magazine publishers, such as Today’s Parent Magazine. Rick designed and created commercial art for clients including Los Angeles World Airports, Apple Computer, Omnitrans, Celestial Seasonings, World Conservation Union, and Scripps College. For a time he and his brother also ran their own advertising agency. His public art commissions include installations in the Greater Ontario Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Ontario International Airport. The airport was his first and longest standing client, which included producing their first color poster.

Caughman’s fine art emphasizes the human experience in narrative, abstract or metaphoric form. He creates using a broad spectrum of media including acrylic, charcoal, gouache, ink, crayon, etching and printmaking. Examples of his diverse approaches are his series of iPad Mini photographs converted to aquatint etchings from Solarplates and drypoint etchings printed on an offset lithography press.
