MEDIA RELEASE – May 29, 2015
CALL FOR ART: Joshua Tree National Park Art Exposition 2015
The third annual Joshua Tree National Park Art Exposition will be held in November 2015 at the Oasis of Mara in Twentynine Palms, California. The Juried Art Exhibition, a highlight of the annual exposition, will hang at the historic 29 Palms Art Gallery, Nov. 6 to 29, with a gala opening reception and awards ceremony on Friday, Nov. 13, followed by weekend exposition events Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 14 & 15.
It is well known that the desert attracts artists and creative types, and that there is an ever growing arts community in the High Desert of California. This region includes Joshua Tree, Morongo Basin, 29 Palms, and Yucca Valley. The primary access to the arts community is through its art events, but the Hwy 62 open studio Art Tours is different. Two weekends long, the Tours gives visitors a unique opportunity to meet artists in their respective studios and/or homes. What began in 2001 with just 24 participating artists has since grown to 140 artists and 95 studios (some artists share a space). This year the event took place during the nice and cool fall season, on October 25-26 and November 1-2. I went on the first weekend with my parents, who are art lovers, and left with a strong impression of the scale and identity of the High Desert arts community and culture, one that is nurtured and defined by the environment.
“Water in the Desert” at Twentynine Palms Visitor Center
"Water in the Desert: Scarcity and Abundance” is the theme for the summer Art in Public Places exhibition at the Twentynine Palms Visitor Center and Chamber of Commerce, 73484 29 Palms Hwy., in downtown Twentynine Palms. The show runs from July through September.
Desert artists are invited to submit one original piece of art for possible inclusion in the group exhibition, and can deliver their artwork to the visitor center on Friday, June 27, between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Artwork must depict or be inspired by the theme of water in the desert, focusing on either its scarcity or abundance, from storms and flash floods to dust devils and drought.
Acceptable media include photography, painting, drawing, watercolor, and mixed media; or artists may submit three-dimensional work such as assemblage, sculpture, ceramics, or fabric art. All work must be ready to mount or hang with professional wire, must be offered for sale, and should be suitable for viewing by the general public.
Awards were presented to 19 desert artists during a reception on Sunday, April 6, 2014 for the annual Members Show at the Twentynine Palms Art Gallery. Joshua Tree artist Bobby Furst was the judge this year.
The exhibition, which features nearly 70 works by members of the Twentynine Palms Artists’ Guild, will be on display at the Twentynine Palms Art Gallery, 74055 Cottonwood Dr., through April 28.

The 29 Palms Art Gallery will kick off its 2014 season with exhibits by Snake Jagger and Harley Baczkowski.
The Main Gallery will feature an infrared photo exhibit by photographer and multimedia artist, Harley Baczkowski. Mr. Baczkowski is a long time resident of 29 Palms and an award winning photographer. The theme of this exhibit is “Unseen Light Show.” Infrared photography requires some specialization, such as knowing which colors in nature will enhance the infrared effect. This type of photography opens the door to a universe we don’t normally see with our own limited vision.
The West Gallery will feature a “Retrospective” show by local artist Snake Jagger. Mr. Jagger has a very unique style of multimedia art that he calls “Whimsical Surrealism.” Jagger combines incongruous objects with the mundane, to create hyper-realistic depictions of the world we live in. At the core of these paintings is Mr Jagger’s personal philosophy- “We only have one world and we cannot allow ourselves to squander its resources. Working together, we can perfect this world’s beauty and potential. We can leave it a better place for all generations yet to come.”
The 29 Palms Art Gallery is issuing an Open Call for Art for the upcoming "Southland Show."
