Arts Connection and Elwood and Associates, in partnership with KOA Corporation, is seeking qualified individual artists or teams to work in collaboration with them to support and create visual materials for the community engagement activities being conducted for the Morongo Basin Active Transportation Plan (MB ATP).
The MB ATP team has identified two opportunities for local artists to participate in for this project. An Artist or Team can apply for one or both opportunities. Please indicate your preference in the letter of interest included with the submission materials.
The first opportunity will be to develop a “graphic zine” that will focus on active transportation safety tips for school children ages 6 to 12. The “zine” shall include imagery and text developed in collaboration with the project planning team to promote safety, pedestrian activity and parent engagement to receive input to the team about making routes to local schools useful and safe.It is anticipated that the artist or team selected for this opportunity shall participate in at least two walk audits in the Morongo Basin area. The walk audits are conducted to receive input from local school groups and parents on what measures may be taken to promote walking and biking to schools.
The selected artist or team shall develop a series of color and black & white sketches to be a part of the “zine” that will be included in a printed “zine” format produced and distributed as part of the project community engagement process.
1 Safe Routes to School “Zine”
Artists with experience in developing color and black & white graphic materials and working in a collaborative spirit are encouraged to apply.
This second opportunity seeks an individual artist or team to work with Arts Connection staff and EA at a series of community outreach events where the public will be encouraged to create original sign artwork. The artist shall work with children and adults. The art activity includes making wayfinding signage to destinations selected by the participants. In addition, the artist shall work with the project team in planning and implementing two temporary sculptures within the project area which feature the original artwork created by the community. The selected artist or team will help plan and organize the installation of these temporary wayfinding sculptures. Artists with experience in organizing community workshops, and/or community-based public art projects in a collaborative spirit are encouraged to apply.
