With six months to go in The Maloof Foundation’s year-long centennial celebration, several new projects are slated to explore the lasting influence of modernist woodworker Sam Maloof (1916-2009) at venues from Riverside, CA to Washington, DC.

The offerings include a symposium, books, catalogs, podcasts and several exhibitions, which will introduce audiences to a broad range of artists who are carrying forward America's studio furniture movement into the 21st century.

Smithsonian Symposium: Why We Make, What We Make
 
“Furniture and the Future,” a day-long symposium presented jointly by the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Renwick Gallery and the Sam and Alfreda Maloof Foundation for Arts and Crafts, will be held September 16, 2016 in Washington, DC.
 
The symposium will examine historical and contemporary design and production of furniture and related objects in light of the fundamental changes brought about by the digital age, considering not only how furniture is transforming to meet the needs of contemporary society, but also the broader implications of why we make, what we make, and how it affects our world. 
 
The symposium is made possible with support from the James Renwick Alliance, the Windgate Foundation and Woodcraft Supply.
 
Cultural historian and curator Michael Prokopow will deliver the keynote address, with additional presentations to be made by architect and author Witold Rybczynski and Paul Sacaridiz, director of the Haystack Mountain School.  Curator and author Glenn Adamson will moderate a panel discussion with contemporary wood artists including Wendell Castle, Wendy Maruyama, Christy Oates, Larry White and Uhuru.
 
Smithsonian Renwick Gallery
 
Visitors to the nation’s capital may also view Maloof work on display at the Renwick, showcased as part of the museum’s soon-to-open reinstallation of its permanent collection galleries. The re-imagined galleries, planned by Nora Atkinson, the Renwick’s Lloyd Herman Curator of Craft, feature one of Sam’s most iconic pieces, the Evans arm chair.  An exquisitely sculpted work, the chair is also featured in the Renwick’s permanent collection catalog.
 
Architect/Author Leads Special Tours
 
On August 6, The Maloof Foundation in Rancho Cucamonga will host a day of tours led by architect Ann Kovara, who served as project manager during relocation of the Maloof Historic home. The project, undertaken in 2000 to save the woodworker’s National Register-listed home from the path of the 210 Freeway, will be recounted by Kovara in three 90-minute-long tours. Kovara will also autograph copies of her new book, Moving Sam, published by Schiffer. Tour tickets are available for purchase at malooffoundation.org.

Los Angeles International Airport
 
Beginning August 20, more than two million visitors to Los Angeles International Airport Terminal 2 will have a chance to see Furniture as Art/Art as Furniture, a pop-up exhibit organized by Southern California furniture maker Stephen Courtney in collaboration with the City of Los Angeles and Los Angeles World Airports. The displayed works, including a Maloof musician’s chair, will highlight Maloof's role as a pioneer in America’s studio furniture movement, noting his influence on a current generation of Southern California designers and makers. 
 
Jurors for the LAX project included LACMA decorative arts curator Bobbye Tigerman, Huntington Library curator of American decorative arts Hal Nelson, and California State University, San Diego educator and artist Wendy Maruyama. The jurors selected more than 20 contemporary furniture artists whose works will be shown alongside the Maloof chair. The LAX display will be on view for six months, through February 15, 2017.

An accompanying catalog, with foreword by Smithsonian Fellow Oscar Fitzgerald, noted author and historian of American decorative arts, will survey additional works, with examples from more than 80 Southern California makers. 
 
Riverside Art Museum Exhibition
 
Riverside Art Museum in Riverside, CA will consider Maloof’s role in inspiring studio furniture makers in the 21st century. The exhibition, Sit By Me, will feature a selection of Maloof pieces, along with works by makers Mike Johnson, Geoffrey Keating, Laura Kishimoto, Laura Mays, Brandon Morrison, and Reed Hansuld. The exhibition runs October 28 through January 29, 2017.
 
LAST CHANCE: Maloof Retrospective 

The retrospective exhibition, Sam Maloof Woodworker: Life | Art | Legacy, which has attracted thousands of visitors to The Maloof since February, is entering its final weeks, closing August 27.  Sculpture in the Garden 2016, featuring works by more than 60 California artists, continues its run at the site, through October 29.
 
Beginning October 2, California Wood Artists: Maloof and Beyond will look to the future, spotlighting sculpture and furniture works by more than 40 contemporary artists, including Gary Knox Bennett, John Cederquist, Barbara Holmes and others. The exhibition will run through February 11, 2017.

Other Maloof Centennial offerings include the critically acclaimed book Sam Maloof: 36 Views of a Master Woodworker by Fred Setterberg, published by Heyday Books. Since debut of the book, the author has been featured in a wide range of broadcast and print interviews, including a full-page review in the Washington Post. Audio and video podcasts from various outlets explore the author’s experiences interviewing Maloof subjects such as President Jimmy Carter and others. Admission to the gallery and gardens at The Maloof is free to all. Regular docent-led tours of the Maloof Historic Home are $15 for adults; the one-day-only Moving Sam Maloof Tours on August 6 are $24/person. San Bernardino – The California Arts Council, a state agency, announced that it plans to award $2500 to Arts Connection as part of its Creative California Communities program. Arts Connection is one of only forty-one grantees statewide for this program.

San Bernardino – The California Arts Council, a state agency, announced that it plans to award $2500 to Arts Connection as part of its Creative California Communities program. Arts Connection is one of only forty-one grantees statewide for this program.

Sacramento - Yesterday, Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. signed a state budget that includes a $10.8 million funding increase for programs of the California Arts Council.

San Bernardino – The California Arts Council, a state agency, announced it plans to award $7,290 to Arts Connection as part of its new Artists Activating Communities program.  The City of San Bernardino Fine Arts Commission also awarded Arts Connection funds in the amount of $8100, which acted as a matching grant, making this programming possible.

Sand to Stone, Contemporary Native American Art in Joshua Tree

The history between artists and National Parks dates back to the 1870s. One of the tenets of the National Park’s Call to Action for the next century is connecting people to parks through art. In January 2015, the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Park Service announced “Imagine Your Parks” – a new $1 million grant initiative under the NEA’s Art Works category, marking the intersection of the NEA’s 50th anniversary in 2015, and the NPS’s centennial in 2016. 

We would like to introduce you to Emalynn Vento, Hannah Thiele and Hannah Lira, three of Arrowhead MotionArts’ premier dancers.  They have been accepted intoThe Joffrey Ballet School West LA Summer Intensive program, and are looking for help with funding.

For quite sometime, the City of San Bernardino has been an embattled ground. And for quite sometime, organizations and individuals have been rising to the occasion and confront the insurmountable past, present and future woes. 

Prior to last year’s unspeakable events, various organizations representing San Bernardino’s art community for example, began a serious series of dialogues around their role and their potential to spur economic and community development. Last September, Arts Connection—the San Bernardino Arts Council’s innovative arm, organized a regional conference that explored creative placemaking, cultural planning and public art. One of the event’s breakout sessions featured renowned planner James Rojas who conducted one of his signature Place It! workshops. 

As a result of the great excitement that people who attended expressed after experiencing the brief opportunity to become urban designers through play, Arts Connection responded by organizing a follow up gathering. Planner Miguel A. Vazquez, AICP, who is a board member American Planning Association Inland Empire Section, was invited to facilitate a workshop on cultural planning.

On January 23, 2016, about 30 people congregated for a 3-hour workshop at the Garcia Center for the Arts in the city of San Bernardino.The event included an overview of the 7 mandated Elements of the General Plan and why an Arts and Culture Element can be the ideal tool to develop policies that can stimulate economic activity. The rest of the workshop took place outdoors. Attendees walked around the Center’s vicinity for about 30-minutes to observe and identify opportunities and obstacles found in the built and social environments. During the event’s last half an hour, everyone who attended had an opportunity to collaborate on building a public space. Individuals who signed up for the workshop were asked to bring random objects of little value found around their home that could be use to create a public space—things like an empty bucket that could be used as a stool or a drum, or a small plant in a pot, etc. After explaining the purpose and rules of engagement, the collective had 15 minutes to build a public space on two parking spaces right outside the Center. There were no specific directions, there was no leader, the activity unfolded organically and at the end, people experienced not only their own collective potential but also their collective creativity and their will to transform a small and unnoticed space into an outdoor living room.

The momentum built as a result of such experience, has prompted Arts Connection to continue to build the narrative towards developing a set of short and long-term activities that includes preparation of an actual Cultural Plan for San Bernardino. 

The next gathering will take place on February 21, 2016, 1 pm at the San Bernardino Community Hospital, Henderson Auditorium.

In an era spanning the early 20th century, through depression ridden times and a dust bowl, one form of revelry thrived – the circus. Traveling from coast to coast, rail cars packed with canvas, exotic animal menageries, strongmen, fat ladies, and roustabouts brought a much needed relief to millions of Americans. Now visitors at the Ontario Museum of History & Art’s new exhibition, Step Right Up! Behind the Scenes of the Circus Big Top, 1890 – 1965, opening February 4, 2016, will get to explore another side of this thrilling spectacle and a history fraught with intrigue and majesty.

As one of America’s oldest theatrical traditions, the circus started as a European transplant in the late 1700s and was perfected in the United States by the likes of John Bill Ricketts and P.T. Barnum, who first introduced us to sideshow oddities like the Feejee Mermaid and Tom Thumb. By 1900, there were more than 100 circuses crisscrossing the country and they were adept at using all of the advancements of America’s industrial revolution - the railroad, color lithography, and mass marketing strategies. The romanticized imagery, backstage stories, and photographs featured in Step Right Up! reveal both the fantasy and reality of circus life, exploring the illusions that played to the imaginations of so many.

Join the Museum for an afternoon full of magic with illusionist Allen Oshiro. This unforgettable illusion act will entertain kids of all ages. This is a free event.  Reservations are required.

Join the Museum for the classic film Dumbo (1941). Light refreshments, crafts and other fun activities will be available prior to the film screening. This is a free event.  Reservations are required.

Circus Poster Presentation and Circus Diorama Workshop, Saturday, February 27, 2016 (2 PM to 4 PM)

Learn about the history of the circus poster from Greg McWhorter, teacher, pop-culture historian and private collector of vintage posters and books. After the lecture, create a small diorama inspired by the intrigue of the circus. To participate, bring a small box. Other materials will be provided. This is a free event.  Reservations are required.

Family Discovery Day: Circus Spectacular! Saturday, March 12, 2016 (Noon to 4 PM)

Explore the exhibit Step Right Up! Behind the Scenes of the Circus Big Top, 1890 – 1965 and participate in art workshops, a photo booth, entertaining acts and face painting for the whole family! This is a free event.

Step Right Up! Behind the Scenes of the Circus Big Top, 1890 – 1965 takes viewers behind the scenes of the circus, exploring the dramatic pageantry, colorful past, and living presence of this grand American theatrical tradition.  The exhibition is toured by ExhibitsUSA, a national program of Mid-America Arts Alliance. ExhibitsUSA sends more than 25 exhibitions on tour to more than 100 small- and mid-sized communities every year. Mid-America is the oldest nonprofit regional arts organization in the United States.
