U.S. Route 66 was one of the first official highways, established in 1926. The highway connected Chicago, Illinois to Santa Monica, California, traveling through 8 states (Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California). Known as “The Mother Road,” Route 66 brought business and prosperity to the communities it ran through. With the creation of the Interstate System in 1956, the once popular highway was bypassed by motorists and in 1985 Route 66 was officially decommissioned.

Mother Road Revisited: Route Sixty-Six Then and Now aims to explore the idea of travel and American culture through interactive photography. Photographs taken in the 1950s and 1960s along Route 66 are paired with contemporary photographs by Natalie Slater taken along the modern day Route 66, from the exact same location and vantage point. Slater then combined the two pictures into a single image that shows both the new parts and the vintage aspects of the same scene. This project is an effort to show what America has done to its once booming American symbol, “The Mother Road.”

Film Screening: Cars (2006), Saturday, August 6, 2016

(Light refreshments and crafts at 5:30 PM, Film Screening at 6:00 PM)

Bring the whole family for the story of rookie racecar, Lighting McQueen, who gets lost on the way to California for a race and ends up on Route 66 in a little town called Radiator Springs. Light refreshments and crafts will be available before the film screening. This is a free event. Reservations are required.

Cucamonga Service Station Lecture, Thursday, August 11, 2016

(6:00 PM to 7:30 PM)

Learn about the restoration of the Cucamonga Service Station, built around 1915, with a presentation by Luana Y. Hernandez, Vice President of the Route 66 Inland Empire Club Association. The station once bustled with travelers who stopped to refuel on the legendary U.S. Route 66 highway running from Chicago, Illinois to Santa Monica, California and through the Inland Empire area. This is a free event. Reservations are required.

Model-A Car Lecture with Richard Delman, Saturday, September 10, 2016

(2:00 PM to 3:30 PM)

Join Pomona Valley Model-A Club representative, Richard Delman for a car viewing and lecture on Model-A cars and the ever changing car culture of Ontario. This is a free event. Reservations are required.
