The Garcia Center for the Arts, San Bernardino

Exhibition May 10-June 9th

“Beyond the Blue” is a traveling exhibit which was most recently on view at the Capitol Building in Sacramento. “Beyond the Blue” is the second major exhibition organized by the Prison Arts Collective (PAC). It represents the diversity of artistic styles and the depth of creative expression in artists who are incarcerated. It provides the unique opportunity for viewers to engage with works created by individuals participating in university and arts programming while incarcerated. “Beyond the Blue” includes dozens of paintings, drawings and handmade objects created by participants in PAC programming. The majority of works are donated by the artists with the dual goal of sharing their work with a wider audience and raising funds to support ongoing PAC programming including materials and supplies. All art works in “Beyond the Blue” are made by participants in PAC projects at seven California prisons including the California Institution for Men, and the California Institution for Women in Chino, California State Prison in Lancaster, the California Rehabilitative Center in Norco, Ironwood State Prison in Blythe and Avenal State Prison in Avenal.

The Prison Arts Collective is dedicated to expanding access to the transformative power of the arts to those who are incarcerated. The PAC is founded and directed by Annie Buckley, arts professor at Cal State, San Bernardino, and is supported by the California Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts and the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

The art works will be on exhibit through June 9th at the Garcia Center for the Arts. There may also be programs accompanying the exhibit. Keep posted for news about these.
